Lake Wanapitei by the Numbers

According to the City of Greater Sudbury, Lake Wanapitei:

  • Covers 13,256.8 hectares
  • Has a shoreline perimeter of 160.4 km
  • Reaches a maximum depth of 142 metres
  • Has about 370 permanent residents and 180 seasonal or recreational residents
  • Holds the record, per the City, as the largest lake in the world completely inside the boundaries of a single city

The lake sits in a crater the City says was formed by a meteorite about 35 million years ago. Its name comes from the word for a molar tooth, after the shape of the lake. The City’s spring phosphorus testing puts it in the likely oligotrophic range, meaning clear, low-nutrient water. The Lake Wahnapitae Home and Campers Association is the lake’s stewardship group.

A Lake Where People Live Year-Round

Unlike a lot of cottage lakes, Wanapitei has more permanent residents than seasonal ones. The community of Skead sits on the south shore, about 30 km from downtown by road, and some lake properties carry Wahnapitae mailing addresses. The lake is part of the traditional territory of Wahnapitae First Nation, and Wanapitei Provincial Park sits on the north shore.

That mix means your buyer could be a family wanting a year-round home on the water, or a cottager looking for a weekend place close to the city. We market to both.

What Wanapitei Buyers Will Ask

  • Road: Is it maintained year-round by the City, or is it a private or seasonal road?
  • Services: septic records and a recent water test
  • Shoreline: frontage, exposure, docks and boathouses, and whether a road allowance runs along it
  • Access: for island and water-access places, where to park and launch
  • Winter use: insulation, heating and whether it works as a four-season home

Our waterfront and recreational selling guide covers each of these. Living nearby? See our Garson and Nickel Centre and Sudbury waterfront and lake living pages too.
